To list all of the areas related to those core topics would require quite a bit of space and perhaps seem ostentatious; however, the electronics industry grew up around us as much as we grew up around it.
Although we have used computer search techniques since they became available, knowledge of the United States classification system is still believed to be the basis for a reliable search. The United States patent classification system up to 2014 is the very best resource for locating inventive concepts because it provides very specific places to collect patents and literature, both U.S. and foreign, based on the subject matter claimed or reading on such claims. Patent examiners are considered as a valuable resource to locate the best art because they continually view the art found in US subclasses under their authority.
Today we still believe that the U.S. Patent Classification System provides the best resource for sorting out inventive concepts even though it appears to be under siege by harmonization fanatics. Still, most searches are done using many of the same techniques that we used over the past decades. Key word searching is not the sole technique for finding art, but many times it is a starting point because more and more patent examiners don't go beyond that technique.
A validity search is begun with a review of the file history when possible so that the search is narrowed to finding only teachings of those concepts that the applicant and the examiner considered novel during prosecution.
